Multisport 101 - Triathlon Bike
By Marni Rakes, USAT Florida Regional Director – Edited by George Miller, Officials Coordinator ( triref@gmail.com)
Do I have to wear a helmet?
Yes! Helmets are mandatory and must be buckled before you mount the bike. Chinstraps must remain fastened until
completely off the bike.
I only have a road bike. Can I use this in a triathlon?
Hybrid, tri-bike, mountain bike or road bike. As long as your bike is safe and meets the bike check-in inspection,
you are allowed to ride any type of bike.
What is the mounting area for the bike?
For safety reasons, you should run/walk your bike to the mounting line, located outside of the transition area.
Although mounting lines are not monitored by USAT officials, race directors usually ask for participants to reduce cycling speed
to an acceptable and safe level when exiting and entering the transition area.
What is drafting?
Common in cycling, drafting is illegal in triathlons. To be out of the drafting zone, you must allow at least 3 bike
lengths between you and the person in front of you. You have 15 seconds to pass on the bike before you will be called
for drafting. If you are passed, you must drop back at least 3 bike lengths.
How do I pass someone on the bike?
Abiding by the rules of the road, you must pass on the left. Many athletes call out "on your left" as he/she is passing
another rider. You will always ride on the right side of the road during a race.
