By Marni Rakes, USAT Florida Regional Director – Edited by George Miller, Officials Coordinator ( triref@gmail.com)
What is triathlon?
Triathlon events, in the following order, consist of swimming, biking and running.
What are the typical distances in multisport events?
Although distances may vary, the following distances are frequently used:
- Sprint: 1/4 mile swim • 20-25k bike • 5k run
- Olympic: 1.5k swim • 40k bike • 10k run
- Half Ironman: 1.2 mile swim • 56 mile bike • 13.1 mile run
- Ironman: 2.4 mile swim • 112 mile bike • 26.2 mile run
What equipment should I have at a triathlon race?
Consider bringing the following items the day of the race:
- Watch/GPS/HR monitor
- Race number (given in race packet)
- Race belt
- Safety pins (if not using race belt)
- Shoe lace locks
- Goggles/cap
- Bike/bike shoes/helmet
- Sunglasses
- Running shoes
- Socks
- Bandaids/vaseline
- Body Glide
- USAT card (packet pickup)
- Drivers License (packet pickup)
- Money
- Friends and family (with cameras!)
- Towel
- Dry clothes
- Sport drinks/water
- Water bottle
- Competitive spirit
What time should I arrive at the race?
You will want to arrive at the race at least an hour before the race starts. No matter what time you start (depending
on waves), the transition area will close approximately 15 minutes before the race start and you will no longer have access
to your belongings in that area. Parking can be tight at most races, so allow enough time for delays. The transition
area may also be overwhelming with lots of athletes and lots of equipment. The earlier you arrive on site, the less
unexpected stress you will experience before the race starts.
