Multisport 101 - Triathlon Swim
By Marni Rakes, USAT Florida Regional Director – Edited by George Miller, Officials Coordinator ( triref@gmail.com)
What are swim waves?
While there are plenty in the ocean, swim waves are a method of breaking athletes into categories (age group, elite, male/female,
relay). Waves are normally separated into 3-5 minute increments, with 30-100 people in each wave. A wave start
does not affect your overall finishing time.
Do I have to wear a swim cap?
Although uncomfortable for many non-swimmers, swim caps are helpful for safety reasons in order to recognize swimmers in
open water. Swim caps are mandatory in the majority of races, and if no official swim cap is provided, athletes should
wear a brightly colored cap for safety reasons.
Why do I have to wear a chip on my ankle?
Chip timing is an electronic method of getting your times for each of the three disciplines. Your chip is encoded
with your information and must be worn on an ankle strap throughout the entire race. No chip, no time!
When can I wear a wetsuit?
Wetsuits are legal up to and including 78 degrees. May be worn if water temperature is above 78 degrees but less than
84 degrees but results will not count. Wetsuits are prohibited 84 degrees and above.
Do I have to be body marked?
Body marking is NOT mandated by USAT. It is the decision of the race organizers. Race numbers are Mandatory
(variable time penalty).
